I think my absolute favorite is The Caine Mutiny. We actually saw it as a training film in OCS. I must have seen it a hundred times.

Another that I like is The Enemy Below, with Robert Mitchum as a destroyer skipper and Curt Jurgens as the U-boat skipper. It is a real cat and mouse game.

I also like In Harms Way, and Run Silent Run Deep

    You forgot
    McHales Navy

In 1986 or 1987 I was a LT in USCG HQ. The Commandant was having a conference of all the retired admirals and they were assigning junior officers to be their aides for a week. I was assigned to Vice Admiral Hirshfield http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/jahirshfield.htm, who is now buried in Arlington. He was the CO of the Coast Guard Cutter Campbell during WWII when they were doing escort duty across the Atlantic. Look at the link for the full story but to cut it short they rammed a U-Boat and then using both surface fire and depth charge destroyed it. He was seriously wounded in the action. He is a legend in the Coast Guard

Having served on the Campbell twice, I was extremely honored to be his aide even if it was only a week.

Things to do when you dead in Denver.

( in my top 5 of all time )

Nate and Hayes, a cheesy 1983 movie starring Tommy Lee Jones set in the Pacific. His boat in the movie is the New Zealand lumber scow Owhiti and there is some actual sailing footage.
