A.K.A. "AI"

I sure hope sufficient measures are in place on this Forum's software to avert AI from posing as new ( or present ) members.

I'm not trying to fear monger but this topic concerns me.

I wonder if Blue Bell is one of those computers that makes you prove you are not a robot. :D

Just what do you think you are doing Dave?

Kinda ironic, Sunday dinner both ai and this website came up.

Friend has gone down the rabbit hole using the various platforms. I had a task that needed to either chase down on the phone or let him go with ai and try to find the answer. It took him two hrs to find the contact info for the outfit in Europe with the capacity to answer my question. It took me two phone calls and less than ten minutes to find the numer and answer.

The more ironic was a question he was trying to find information on. Several of the models had given him data that was not correct, when they gave sources it was to threads on this forum as well as another. It had correlated the prevalent narrative, from one of our more prodigious prior members... but was absolutely incorrect. Gave him the number of two yards and an na that have extensive work in that area. Kinda wild to see a previous moniker of me 20 years ago cited as a source for an answer.

It does seem awesome for calculations, have used it effectively to help with hold volume, rapid unit conversion, and computing total loads with many inputs on hydraulic systems. Not quite sure it's prime time for giving answers that are correct or useful to me.

Some of the systems seem really good at writing biblical text length conversations with itself over inane topics.... in that regard it will be hard to distinguish it from some of the old fellows who prodigiously post here.... maybe thats a case for large language models.

I am a moderator/admin on another boating forum. We (the mod squad) often wonder if some new members and various posts are 'AI' generated (i.e. a 'bot'), and if we should institute some controls over using AI to post responses to questions, etc.

When you search for answers on the Internet, you often get AI-generated responses, which are merely auto-generated summaries of searches of Internet content, some of which can be incorrect information. So, 'AI' for forums are only as good as the 'I' that can be garnered. Then there is the issue of 'fake' content . . . stuff that is not true and intentionally nefarious.

The forum software used here, and on many Internet forums, is 'Xenforo' (see the footer of the web pages). Many forums use it, having departed from 'vBulletin' and others over the past 5-10 years. I would imagine that 'AI' will be a challenge for these forum software companies, much like SPAM has been in the past.

AI will certainly be a challenge over the next few years in a number of ways, from the difficulty of dealing with automated bots (which could be tens of thousands; over a million china mobile and residential proxy IPs had to be blocked last month due to bad AI bots, a scale never seen before) to the way it could transform or impact the nature of learning.

While it is truly amazing for some functions, there is certainly a lot to worry about: accuracy and quality, the lack of traditional safeguards or hierarchy... to what happens to first principles learning, attention span, human interaction, community, and so many other factors that are fundamental to life as we know it.

The guide says Don't panic. We will see where this adventure takes us.

Thanks for that Moderator. Good to know. Much appreciated.
