Fascinating project; I do want to see how it works. I just hope his steel brackets don't break; I'd weld them solid instead of just tack-welding, as tack welds become stress concentration points.

Here's what u asked for, our latest design a 30 foot blue water cruiser, designed for long distance cruising, This boat I designed over a full winter. It's the future of sailing and backyard boat building. She's above all designed to be simple and cheap, because it's time to break some boat building rules, time for simple boats, cheap boats, people boats, can go anywhere and can be fixed anytime boats. There is at time and place for a full weld, as there is one for touch welds. in this case nothing will break as the forces applies are pulling the 2 parts together so the 4 touch welds are truly not loaded at all. Further more I will say that over welding could weaken a joint more than under welding in many cases. A solid weld going from start to finish creates a weak seam that can shear away, versus touch welds that weaken the steel only at a few points..... The side pieces I welded all the way there was no other option. That's what I was taught and that's what I believe, it all boils down to, that sometimes more welding doesn't achieve anything, at times it may even have a negative effect. We sailed hard for 4 days, fully loaded, it's very strong.
