Flying Phantom F 18 Catamaran

This is more good news for the F18 Class. SI Team , Olivier Backes and Arnaud Jarlegan crowned World Champs in 2010 with extra proven sails and now , team CEO , Alex Udin is launching a new F18 design.
From what I'm seeing this could like the "Final Merge" style, but now with more feedback and some new cats launched.

Merge: Capricorn, Wildcat, USA17-AC45, Nacra F20 and each of them with their lineage designs included. You'll see why when more info available.
The Formula 18 continues its development within current rules, although as mentioned before, no much room to play with critical hull forms, lets see if this Phantom will become a Menace for the big 3, as the new Cirrus R with Mischa and Bastian.

Sail Innovation is proud to announce the launch of the Phantom project.
After their F18 world title, Olivier Backes and Arnaud Jarlegan were looking for a new challenge for 2011.

We decided to develop a brand new 18' in close collaboration with Martin Fischer, in order to present a flying cat for Olympics Games selection for Rio.

The Phantom 18' is based on all the development Martin’s did on the foils on the A Class since several years.

After testing a lots of different foils and lifting rudders designs, Martin has find a brand new foils shape in combination with special lifting rudders which allows the boat to be really stable and fast while flying but also be very competitive in the light wind.
We are convinced by the fact the flying cats is probably the future of our sports in terms of performance but also for the show.

An F18 version of this 18” has been developed in parallel to test the hull in different configuration.
We are actually finishing the first boat in the F18 version in order to prepare the Eurocat. Olivier and Arnaud will be the first crew sailing on the boat.

I am already very proud of all the team for being so much involved in this challenging project, it is another fantastic adventure for SAIL INNOVATION.

Specs
The boat is not just a modified F18 but it is entirely designed to foil, the only common part is the shape of the hulls.
Lenght: 5,52m / 18"
Width: 3,00m
Mast: 9,5m / Carbon autoclaved
Weight: 150kg
Hulls construction: PVC sandwich, carbon fiber, epoxy
Main area: 18sqm with mast
Jib area: 5sqm
Gennaker area: 24sqm

Speed against other racing boats
As soon as you have enough wind to fly a hull in 6 knots of True Wind Speed, the boat is faster upwind and downwind than an F18, the boat takes off downwind at 10 knots of TWS and then is much faster than most of the beach cats. We did some speed testing against a Vampire Marstrom 20 (3,5m wide) and the Phantom is faster downwind as soon as it foils and very similar upwind in 15knots of TWS.

Max Speed
We have actually reached 27 knots in 18 knots of TWS without kite and no one trapezing , we are actually working to improve the control of the steering which is clearly the limit to go faster. We believe we could achieve between 30 and 35 knots while we will have improved the stability of the boat.

Goal of the project and production alternatives
The target is to be able to produce a real production boat for next year, we are still doing some development on the foils and we try to make the systems as simple as possible in order to get a boat usable by most of the club sailors. We believe the new generation of foiling cats could attract more people to cat sailing, like the parabolic ski did 10 years ago. All sailors who sailed the boat are extremely enthusiastic, flying above the water brings incredible new sensations and although not requiring any specific skills.

Costs
The target price is to be only slightly more expensive than an F18 by having a fully industrialized product and selling direct. We hope the boat will be around 25 000 Euros ex tax.

Flying

This boat is just the begining and is an example of "trickle down" from the 34th Americas Cup-particularly the revolutionary mainfoil design of Team New Zealand refined by the braintrust of Sail Innovation.
There are a number of manufacturers considering doing cat foilers across a range of sizes-if they work as well as the Flying Phantom claims to then we're about to be in a whole new world where foiling will be accessible to just about everybody-not just the most athletic among us.

This is the first production boat to use a refined version of the foil system(3foil, single main foil) and foil pioneered by TNZ and adopted to one degree or another by all the AC 72's and several C Class boats.
