It's this time of the year around here*, a young common chaffinch just left the nest, but for the next few weeks it's still fully dependent on its parents for food. - (*Dutch link)

    — pic source in Dutch — the municipal government Bocholter City on Facebook on May 2, 2019 (in German) — the pictured action was on Feb. 13, 2019 —

‘‘ Bocholt eine Taube geht viral: Der Vogel war wegen überhöhter Geschwindigkeit in Bocholt geblitzt worden. ’’ (German link)

‘‘ Bocholt (Germany) a pigeon goes viral: The bird has been flashed because of excessive speed in Bocholt. ’’

Max allowed speed there is 30 Km/h (18.64 miles/h), the bird was doing 45 km/h (27.96 miles/h), so just taking off I think, as homing pigeons can easily double that, but this is an common wood pigeon, don't know about their max speed . .

Any way the pigeon did 150 % of the speed limit there, but it was not on the road I think . . :)

Multiple ducks have been laying eggs in a nesting box that I have in my back yard. The practice is called egg dumping. I have a remote camera to monitor the box.

‘‘ Common Merganser mom leading a brood of 76, yes, 76 ducklings. ’’ (not caused by egg dumping, see the story)

Please keep us posted if anything becomes from the nest in your box, what are your previous experiences with the outcome of egg dumping ?

Right now I have two ducks, a mated pair, taking turns sitting on this clutch of 36 eggs in another box at the other end of my back yard. Typically about 30 will hatch from that number.

In the past I have had many normal, 12 or so, clutches hatch out with one or two bad eggs. Here is a group of 21 ducklings from a clutch of 24 where only two hens must have laid eggs. I followed them down to the bayou after they bailed out of the box and exited the yard under the fence.

This shows two ducklings leaving the box to join the adults and siblings two meters below on the ground. One has jumped and the other is just peeking over the edge. I installed mesh on the inside of the box under the hole for them to climb up on the inside.

Thanks for the pictures and info Jolly, all interesting, and amazing that the partly due to egg dumping very large broods are doing so well . . :)

This is one of my favorite photos that I have taken of one of the Black Bellied Whistling Duck families from a nesting box that I provided. I had to stop traffic on the street for them to cross. A few folks got out of their cars and snapped photos with their mobile phones. I followed them until they made their way to a pond on the local golf course.

Below a pic from the thread: a better tiki 21

It looks to be a good idea to let small people show how roomy your boat is, jockeys would be good at it I think, as without good references you can't estimate their length very well, I believe . . .
