I know I'm just an armchair sailor but those short floats wouldn't inspire my confidence, maybe it's just the video I've seen but Idec looks like it hobbyhorses a lot and seems to always be wanting to dig the bows in, I reckon it needs longer floats.
But hey it just broke the record so what would I know !

But that's exactly why Nigel Irens likes to stick on those big bows!

Here's Thomas Coville's notorious nosedive right after starting his 2011 Jules Verne. In spite of the wickedly submerged port hull, the boat came up again.

Don Quoville found smiling handsomely to the camera difficult in this posture, and before he reached the sheet or the tiller his steed Sodebo had picked herself up again.

There was a good comment on this from "Hump101" in Brittany at the time:

This is the clever consequence of the extended main hull and balance of width and buoyancy distribution - the boat pitches and yaws as the lee hull slows, but it only yaws until the main hull bow hits the water and stops the yaw rotation, which then slows the pitch rotation. The earlier this happens in the plant, the less pitch rotation, and the more chance of recovery. With similar length hulls the boat would have continued to yaw and pitch further, past the point of no return.

It's not exactly fit and forget, but it makes the boats so much more resistant to pitchpoling, so perfect for singlehanded racing, even if the price is a slightly heavier, slower, boat. Really clever design, as not only does it reduce the pitchpole risk in the plant, but it induces this planting response whilst still in the safe-to-recover zone. As pointed out by others, the skipper didn't have to do anything - the foils weren't in the water and the sails weren't dumped. NI is a genius, in my opinion, so far ahead in his understanding of how these boats behave dynamically.

But now and then you take off, on your own, and incidentally scare the daylights out of the entire family and make headlines around the world, returning home a hero greater than before!

His wife Virginie Joyon, his two daughters Juliette, 26, and Marion, 24, as well as the couple's two boys, Corentin, 20 and Damien, 13, were all aboard the giant, red, 30-meter long multihull, the same with which he had in 2008 set the record for sailing alone around the world (57 days, 13 hours, and 34 minutes).

"We're very very happy", said Virginie Joyon to the AFP, admitting to having feared the worst. "He scared us just a little bit, more than on the other occasions, because now he was really going very fast."

The sailor with the burly appearance but the soft and poised voice admitted as much: "there are certainly ways of becoming very frightened on these boats".

Taking advantage of a low pressure system to gain speed, Joyon traversed 3,222 miles at an average speed above 26 knots, approaching his formal record of the longest distance sailed in 24 hours (666,2 miles, or 1,233.4 km).

It was a performance which impressed his son Corentin: "He was up to as much as 40 knots, it's just amazing!"

I guess that's the drawback to being a record breaking solo sailor,
you have to leave the wife and kids out of the most intense moments.
