I've made two more jigs today.

The first (orange) is where the glass is wound on that will enclose the pin housings and connect them to the beams.
The black PE strip is so the glass can be cut through and taken off the jig to go to the beams. The circumference was made the right length.

The second is the plastic pipe on the right. The glass wound on it gets wound back around the beams to hold the above mentioned glass in position.
It will eliminate rhe risk of delamination.

The driving end of the jig 'holder'. The reason for adding the thickened part is so I won't have to adjust the motor position each time a different jig is added.

The trailing end. The thickened part is loose over the pipe and can be removed to take the different jigs off.

The hull jig's ends. The disk with screws will be welded on the one pipe end and the sprocket just gets fitted and bolted ( or is it nutted ?) in place.

It is still too hot to do the beam ends. Since there are two sets of glass that goes on the pin housings and the beam ends, I don't want to risk the resin to start kicking too early.

In the mean time, I'm making a counter for the jig. This will make it easier to achieve the required amount of layers when assembling the beams.

Took me half the afternoon to find the parts in this unorganised workshop of mine. In the end the stuff was found, sitting on my desk

I will decide later how fancy it should be, I have to adjust the software that I wrote before for the timer in pic 2 that I made for using when doing the glassing.

The time can be preset, in this case 15 min. It gives a beep every minute and on 15 minutes an alarm. You'll be surprised to see how long some things take to do. The timer just keeps one's attention and reminds you of the time worked.

I restart the timer each time new resin is mixed.

 

The next jig would be for glassing the hulls. This is a fairly big jig, 11m in total and 600mm diameter.

Then a jig for the masts, not as big but long. I will have to make some kind of support system for it so the center doesn't sag.

All just goes frustrating slow, mostly a shortage of hands here, but yes, it works quite well and very fast.

I have in the meantime decided to build myself a smaller cat also, probably 8 or 9 meters, also trailable but more like a daysailer.

4 5 c, don't tell the wife, it will ruin 2010 and on into eternity for sure

Ja for the moment Im stuck over here still, Ive just come back from SA about two weeks ago, I went to take my wife and 8 month old boy back home, now Ive just got to make enough dosh to get my container home with house stuff, tools etc and then , some more dosh for my dogs and finally a bit more dosh to get me home. Hoping to get back by around end March and I can start again.
Ill be a bit far away from you guys down in PE(actually Im not sure where you are-where are you???) and where are Manie and Wynand as wel?? but of course if ever you are in PE , w'ell have to get to gether and go for a drink or two.

i greatly admire the optimism here, many possibilities for failure. those folding beams are a serious bit of engineering.

I've wrestled with them more than you can know, but I finally got it figgered. My fiberglass guy concurred, they will be good to go.

Just a couple of shots of the same sort of idea you have that worked very well from Roger Simpson's design board from Australia, built in aluminium. The owner relayed to me that it was quite stiff and sailed well with just a little movement in the hinge's.

Thanks. I will gladly look at what others did. I have considered SS also, but doesn't matter which way there was always some drawback between weight, strength and cost. I have seriously considered SS, and it would bave been easier to do since the parts can all be laser cut and welded, but the weight...

I think folding boats are a good idea, and I'm surprised there aren't more builders that does this kind of thing. Most people would like more space than the common power boat and doesn't want to leave it in a marina. We fish different places so obviously it must be trailable amongst other things.
