Bayliner 175 cracked engine block

    Might be permanent, Martin. The cost of repair will buy an equivalent outboard, at less than half the weight. The 3l block is around 550#, and then there's the leg, and the manifold, etc. The weight of the entire assembly, to deliver 101hp to the prop, is around the weight of Mercury's 450hp outboard.

    Yes, right around 4 miles.

    It is a do over John. Find a good skiff. Around here, $1500 will get you a working rig. Might be a wet ride.

    hope you didn't pay much for the other one

    There's very little for sale around here. Thousands of islands, and the same in coastline, and nobody going on trips out of country, or even province for a couple years, and a boat trip to the lodge starts to look like the only option.

    Your Binliner (sorry, Bayliner) looks nice John - good potential there, but that is a bummer about the engine.
    Having a cover over the bow seating area is a wise move - and I doubt that you would be using that area much anyway, at least not until summer rolls around.
    And the canvas enclosure over the helm looks very sensible, especially for use in winter! Might be difficult to arrange some type of heating, but then I know that Canucks are hardy creatures, and not phased by temps below freezing.
    If you can find a smaller diesel knocking around, could that be feasible to install, rather than trying to find another similar size petrol engine?

    Diesels usually run at lower rpm, so the gear ratio does not match properly.

    It seems to me the issues around physically mounting a completely different engine, which custom engine mounts, shaft alignment, shaft adapter issues, and other things I haven't thought of, would be harder than reinforcing the transom to take a bracket and throwing on an outboard. But I'm sure plenty of binliner owners have learned what it would cost to replace their "iron duke", and explored other options. Maybe there are kits.

    The transom is the most critical piece in a powerboat. If they fail; you swim.

    My thoughts:
    OMG, I can't even begin...
    I'm going straight to the punch line:
    Leave all that stuff in the blackberries and use the time, energy, and money to finish M/V SERENITY.
    Use her to move with and perform sea-trials at the same time.
    You're already delayed a month now anyway.
    I can justify this with a list 3 pages long, but it ain't pretty.

    Gotcha
    Serenity is too big for the slip at the marina though. She's the size of a winnebago, but with much worse gas mileage.
