    New Rules IC

Steve, What is the deal with the new rules? Have they been approved yet? I've been wanting to design and build a canoe for quite a while now, but I would definitely be more interested if the rules that you proposed actually went through

Excel sheets for Sub "T" - ABS calcs need checking

Hi YankeeDelta, I am currently preparing a RIB for Subchapter T certification, and I would be very interested in looking at your spreadsheet, if for anything to just compare it with what I have worked out over the last couple of weeks. This is the first Subchapter T boat that I have been...

CAD..for those using CAD in their design process

I use a mouse and a 3-d spaceball. If you work regularly with 3D packages, then this is a very powerful tool that saves vast amounts of time, not to mention helps reduce the possibility of carpel tunnel.

    Unidirectional Fiberglass

You shouldn't need Chopped matt if you're using epoxy for the resin

    Line plan fiberglass boats 8 - 12.5meters

That is a wonderful link actually, although I don't think it serves as a very good primer on lofting per se. It is probably the most clearly presented volume on small boat building out of wood that I have ever seen. Thanks for the link.

    Line plan fiberglass boats 8 - 12.5meters

Get youself a basic book on yacht design. Skenes Elements of Yacht Design is a good one. Also, Lofting by Alan Vaitses is a good one.

3D hull and equipment models from the internet

Thanks Doug. I was originally trying to import it into VX...which is usually excellent at dealing with these things, but not in this case for some reason. IN any case, Rhino worked fine. Much appreciated.

3D hull and equipment models from the internet

That outboard model comes through as jumbled lines for me....Is it working for anyone else? I would love to get a 3d outboard model to use on some of my center console designs. So far the only ones I have been able to find are of old 50's vintage evinrude 3 hp motors that look absolutely silly...

The I HATE CHUCK PAINE - beach BBQ...

Well, I cruise the coast of Maine regularly, andc there is a center cockpit Morris 46ish, and that is one of the ugliest boats I have ever seen. If you go to Chuck's website he points out that he will draw you whatever you want. I sailed by this boat with the owner aboard the other day (I...

    Building another rudder (winged)

I wouldn't give up on the foam so early. You can by blue or pink styrofoam that does not resemble the stuff mentioned above. It is easy to work and sand, and you can get it through Mcmaster-Carr; it is marketed as "square edge" and I think Dow manufactures it. I use it for making quick plugs...

    laminate design

Falcon, The question of whether or not the laminate is "correct" is really not correct I think. I think the question you should be asking is how can I achieve the same strength and stiffness with a different laminate, with the desired effect of making the boat light or heavier or whatever...

cruising boats made of carbon fibre and epoxy resin, +?

Carbon is so stiff that water slapping the hull and twisting of the hull shell is transmitted as noise inside the boat. If you ever talk to people who have done offshore sailing on the maxi cats or open 60 boats, the one thing they all talk about is the intense noise they experience all day...

    stayed vs. unstayed

I should add that the engineering of each mast is quite different. While the stayed mast is in compression for the most part, and unstayed mast deals with all kinds of bending forces.

    28 foot cold mold

fir is also much stronger than luan, although it is more difficult to get a nice surface with fir ply, as it tends to be a little rough and hairy.

    surface works user groups

Well, Although surfaceworks looks a little bit different than its predecessor, Multisurf, it is functionally quite similar. In other words, if you wanted to create a curved, raked transom in Surfaceworks, the process would be identical to the process in Multisurf. That said, you might want...

    Chine Flat Construction Questions

Hi, I am designing a plywood kit boat at the moment, and I have run into a problem trying to come up with a simple way of constructing a chine flat. My preference is to do this without using a chine-log because the aim here is to have the boat be buildable by people with limited boatbuilding...
