    My Design - Trifoglio 25' - Suggestions & Opinions

This is a boat for me. No racing planned. Junk rigged. I want her to bring me around my usual sailing area. It is thought to be easy to singlehand, and that's what I want to do. Just move around, me and her, exploring, enjoying, experimenting.

This there are two pictures of the boat heeled 20° with displ 1,8tons ant 2tons. They seem fine, dont you think?

'My' calculations are just the ones that the software gives me. I just need to set the correct depth, and I have been able to get this simple task wrong more than one time. I teach mat in an highschool, not an expert at all. I love boats, at some point I started wandering exactly how do they...

It looks better, thats true. Yes the part in the water is the blue one. I attach a pic with the waterline also imposed. I will post a pic of the heeled vessel. In a chop, helled, she will show the 'middle' flat area to the water. But, it is not very wide, it should be between 10 and 15 cm...

Yes, a radius would be better. But, I saw blogs about scows with radius bow, and I cant really do that. Way to difficult to realize for me! Check if you like the website of Yann Quinet Design (construire un voilier http://www.boat-et-koad.com/). He is circumnavigating on his 4mt scow Balushon...

Thanks. I know the thread and I studied it. Some of the threads I found here I printed and I keep in my library among books on yacht design.

The problem you both refer to - bow being too low on the water - is something I underestimated. The bow was 5 cm (2,7) inch above the surface. Today I tried again increasing it, and it seems to me it worked better. I increased the height of the bow above the water to 11cm (4.4inch). I like this...

I dont think it needs to be interpreted. I just try to avoid the bow to go underwater. Aren't we talking exactly about this?! ;) This is the hull heeled at 20 degrees (max stability angle). Do you think the bow is too low on the water?

In these images the boat is not heeled, but the waterline is correct.

Yes, I use Polycad, which gives stability calculation and the render of the hull at all angles. No, the bow never goes underwater, even if heeled. The transom does when heeled, but not the bow. In Boats with an Open Mind, Bolger commenting his Scow Schooner design, says that in a scow you should...

This evening I tried to increase the height of the bow, but it did not work, I'll have to try better. I rised the bottom part of the bow and adapted the curve of the hull starting from midship, but I think I over did it and it become a little odd looking. When I say that I'm going to loose...

You are the second person that give me this suggestion. I'm afraid I should try something in that direction.. May I ask which design are you building? There are many scow dingy that I like. If I increase the height of the bow, I will loose some displacement there. I guess I could move the keel a...

About breaking. I agree, the bow can brake. Given its shape it is more subject to be punished. I designed three (or four?) longitudinal stiffeners that divides the part of the hull in front of the first bulkhead into small watertight compartments. Hope this makes ot strong enough. I was also...

Sorry I did not see you post before! You know, scows are a wide debated topic. I am a lover of scows, so I guess my replies may be considered biased. Once a read an interview of Bob Perry, in which he said that once he saw the first scow bowed mini (the Magnum) thought 'Let's hope it wont be...

I am using freeship!+ and Rhino for Mac for the last illustration posted, but mainly the first. About the bow, the modification you suggest may be interesting, at the beginning it was higher, but than I had to make it a little lower for the displacement. I hope the inclination of the bow will...

Update: few changes to obtain proper displacement after the correct dimensions and weight for ply panels has been set (I was a bit on the light side). Deck was cut open and interiors details slightly modified. New keel designed (little bigger). Now using offsets to define details of bulkhead...

Dear Gonzo, I've read many posts of yours in this forum, and it looks like your knowledge on boat is much bigger than mine. I wish I could use it asking a few questions to help me to proceed. I love sharpies - even if I saw them just studying The Sharpie Book -, I know they are known to behave...

Thank you for the reply. There are two main reasons. First (and probably most important) I found it difficult to design a single chine hull. Single chine hulls are unseen in areas I go for sailing. Never saw one for real. Also multichine are extremely rare. I just could not design a single chine...

Little update: On a deeper look, Gerr's book - and the kind advices of a designer I keep on stalkering with my questions on his social media - gave quite different dimensions.. I need to rethink the scantlings. I also added a couple of longitudinal stiffeners that were missing, had to move the...
