Designing a sailing dinghy for expeditions

Final Result I’m sorry for not giving you guys an update before, but I have been quite busy lately. In my thesis I explored the possibility for a new sailing dinghy, designed for costal expeditions. The goal was to develop a concept for a sailing dinghy that enables more people to experience...

Designing a sailing dinghy for expeditions

Hobie island has similar battens. They cannot be completely vertical because they need to hold the peak of the sail out. If the battens are flexible enough, they will still be able to roll up on the mast. It seems to be working for hobie.

Project Update 6: Problems and possibilities I have been thinking a lot about the problem with the floats. The placement of the oarlocks prevents the floats from being placed further towards the bow (they are pushed as far forward as possible). If I remove the floats, the wings will still be a...

More about the floats of ePoH: "D’Armancourt didn’t want to design a trimaran. “There is nothing like steering a monohull,” he says. The problem was gaining sufficient buoyancy from the two floats without adding too much weight. The aim is to rely on the stability of the floats if there is a...

@sharpii2 and @Dolfiman, I appreciate that you share your concerns. This is definitly something I should work on and improve. I have not prioritized room for sleeping aboard. I think only a small percentage of the users would be interested in that. In scandinavia, you can put a tent up wherever...

Designing a sailing dinghy for expeditions

I think you are picturing a different boat than me, @philSweet . This project has greatly been inspired by Magne Klann who sailed Norway from north to south, about 1000 nautical miles, in an RS Aero. He brought with him about 30kg of equipment. forum | General Discussion | NORWAY TO PORT! | RS...

Thank you for your tips, @Angélique . I will try to get in touch with Ragnar. My plan for the scale model is to use cnc milled foam for the hull and 3D print the smaller parts.

@Dolfiman, thank you! I will calculate the weight when I get home from easter holiday. Right now I’m at a cabin and I don’t have access to the CAD files.

I'm thinking rotomolded polyethylene is a good choice because it can handle rough treatment, like geting pulled up on a rocky beach. If you get a scratch, it is not so visible. It is impact resistant. Also, it can be recyceled, which is a pluss. But, of course, the weight is important and I need...

Two people, yes. The displacement at the waterline is 227 kg. The displacement at the waterline + 0.7 cm is 247 kg. But remember that I'm not a naval architect and this is just a concept. A naval architect would have to do the final hull design if this was going to be produced. Right now it's...

Designing a sailing dinghy for expeditions

@Angélique, good idéa with the wheel! I haven’t calculated the weight yet because I do not know what material thickness is necessary for a boat like this and I don’t know the density of the polyethylene that is used (that might be easy to find out). Do any of you know? If I had the density and...

Project Update 5 – Concept 1.2 Finally, here is a project update. I have been working on making the concept I posted earlier more realistic. I am struggling a bit with deciding what kind of rig the boat should have. I want it to be simple and user friendly both when sailing and...

Project Update 4: Concept 1 The concept is combining three principles: A good rowboat is often narrow and has outriggers for correct position of the oars Kayaks with sails often have buoyant outriggers for stability Several sailing dinghies, like Tiwal and Waszp, have a frame that gives the...
