    OK, here the promised clues.....

My first focus was on this forum, so I read that Richard is on a 50ft Bavaria (which he don't like) in the Aegean Sea. That narrows it down a bit...!!

Lets now focus on the island and the business, after which the island is named and has to do with boats, and is the only proper business which has ever been done there. Fishing . . . . . . ? ? ?

    - Is it in the box Richard ??

    - Is it on the list ??

    - Is the English name of the business in de name of the Island ?? (I guess not!)

    - Could it be one of the Dodecanese Islands ?? (the hills seems to be looking like that)

    • Who's gonna elaborate on this ?? •

    Good luck!

    Angel

    I'm back, folks!
(Altough I will not be able any more to devote as much time as I did to these forums)

Well, let's see...rather abundant trees for the zone suggests to me the eastern coast of the Aegean, so at or close to the Turkish coast.

A close by island named after a main business there having to do with boats...boatbuilding? a port? fishing? mmmm.....

The position of the sun (around mid-day) over Richard (boat heading SSE?) suggests an inlet or bay +/- N-S oriented.

Marina or popular anchorage at the bottom...mmmmm.....

    Perhaps at the Marmaris-Rhodes-Bodrum area....?

Or then the Kekova-Megisti area...? (Although that's not really the Aegean)

A wild guess: something to do with Onassis?

    Well, lets look at that............

Ari was born in Melantia, Smyrna (nowadays Karataş in İzmir, Turkey).

Postcard from the days Ari was born there in ± 1900.
(the hills are across the bay and not on an island)

Just off coast we have Chios which is known for for its strong merchant shipping community..., but I don't know of any connection of a boat related business with the name of the island though.

    Are we getting closer Richard....?

    Cheers!
    Angel

    PS

I looked up the meaning of the name.

‘‘ According to the historical records, Chios has probably taken its name from the nymph Chiona or because it was snowing (snow=chioni) a lot, when Chios, the son of Poseidon, was born. However, there is another version, which says that the name Chios means mastic*, in the Syrian language.’’ - * Mastic "tears of Chios" is traditionally produced there.

Well three options, but unfortunately non of them is not boat related.

So I stick to post#3784 for now.

The name is not boat related as one of the clues prescribed. See also the poetess Sappho.

The name Lesbos / Lesvos was there even before Sappho. ‘‘In Greek mythology the island was first populated by the grandchildren of Helios viz; Mytilene, Methymna, Issa, Antissa, Arisve, Eressos, Kydrolaos, Neandros and Leukippos. From these grandchildren the main settlements derived their names. One of the granddaughters was married to Lesvos, son of the Thessalian hero Lapithos, and it was from him the island derived its name. A second theory is the word Lesvos means island with lush vegetation.’’

    Cheers!

Im flattered Richard, you are to kind  Btw, nice to put a face to a person ;)

I had never expected this thread to be popular when I started it with that holiday snap shot of Houtbay entrance.
That said, over the last 3789 posts I had discovered that the world extends quite a bit further than my native land and with every post posted, I learn some more. In fact, I feel like a world traveler and I believe many others gained from this tread as well.
The beauty of this tread in my case, is when you research a "where am I" post, one come across a lot of other useful and interesting information that is informative that would have been "lost".

Then there is our Angel - many thanks for the research you do and post on some of the places posted....

All the regular posters, I salute you. Enough said, lets play the game

This thread is, indeed one of my favourite places on the internet.

I think Richard is just a little further East. Just off your map, Angel.

I concur. This is one of my favourite(Queen's English) threads on the entire Internet, as well, even if I don't know the places most of the time. Very good mental exercise it is.

I've been intensively searching for an island which name is related to something to do with boats, sea trade, etc.
I'm strongly inclined to think the photo was taken in the turkish coast, but I cannot unequivocally find the island.
Perhaps Tersane (old name: Telandria) in the bay of Fethiye?
It is said its name comes from an old shipyard there, now in ruins. See attached image.
The Ottoman fleet used the island as a dockyard during World War I.
C'mon Richard, show up, we need more clues! :)

    No,

    no more clues!

You have got it !!! Almost unbelievable.

I wanted to post another picture of exacly this little bay, where the "Tersane" (boatyard) still is to see, but had no internet connection for 3 days (out at sea) and now you have found it already.

On your picture, the remainders of the yard are at the left side in the background.

    Your turn Guillermo.

And Angel, you have laid the tracks, so congrats as well!

    Regards
    Richard

    Here we go:
This is a group of three small islands, being the one in the middle, named after a Queen, the only one inhabited.
They have been important from the ecological point of view due the population of an almost extinct seagull species was recovered up to important numbers from the few remaining breeding couples there.

What are they, where are they and what is the species?

    (And yes, I've been there)
