taniwha nice to hear from you! glad to know we have another saffa that is a Yrvind fan.
Of course Houtbay is fantastic - I wrongfully assumed that because the "LAW" sits just on the other side of the mountain you are also burdened under a heavier load of beaurocracy and the so called "officials"

Just for our "overseas" friends the clearance procedures are similar in PE, only difference is that the offices are close by and not an half an hour bus ride away like in Cape Town

Houtbay is beautifull and the fish market and restaurants are fantastic.

My problem is that the harbors that are closest to me - Durban and Richards Bay are hopelessly too busy and the "authorities" dont really care for any "private" pleasure boaters. The ships in and out to China is causing a trafic jam ;)

The irony of it all is that the road to Cape Town and Houtbay is MUCH better that the road to Port Elizabeth.
So to me the only difference is really where can I go where I am welcome.
So taniwha if Sven decides either way - keep a berth for me as well, I wouldn't miss it for all the tea in china

    :D

So guys who do you think is competition to South Africa for this honour
    French Polynesia (any)
    Chile
    South Georgia
    Tristan da Cunha
    Iles Kerguelen
    Tasmania
    New Zealand

and what I would like to learn about from "you Folks" - why not - why wouldn't you go to a specific place to launch the Yrvind Ten ?

    enjoy

Maybe he is concerned that a deep keel will increase the odds of having a capsize as opposed to just having a knockdown and sliding down a wave front? Just guessing here.

    Hi. Greetings from Stockholm, Sweden.

Enjoying this thread. Have, as many of you, followed Yrvind's designs and journeys from a distance on his website for many years now. Read one of his books also. Hope to meet / hear him speak some day. Missed a chance at the wilderness/boat show in Stockholm some month back, shame. Think he's a very cool person who is not afraid to go his own way , he seems very happy to do what he does, exploring new, often radical designs and being out on the sea as long as possible.

It's an interesting project, this downwind barrel for the screaming 50's. Very much a "record breaker design", a one-person life boat. But he has the right CV for the job, hard to argue against that.

About the above launch point - He seems to be a fairly economical person with rather limited means. (Which also dictates the size of his boats, and probably the speed he can build them) So fairly likely, he'll choose a launch point primarily based on where it's cheapest to transport his 10-feeter (and himself) to from Sweden. Secondarily probably cost of the stay during final preparations. Might be South Africa, I don't know?
