hi we have a 1979 -80 ,115hp yamaha out board engine v4 which runs very well but because we have just purchased it, there was some parts missing. We have got almost all now, but there is one thing that we seem to be having trouble with. There is a pipe which goes from the very top of the cylinder head down in to the case, when the engine is running, water is coming from it in to the case what is this pipe for ?

Its probably the 'tell tale' this allows air out of the top of the head so water is cooling everywhere. This pipe should come out of the casing some where, usually at the bottom. it also indicates that all is well with the cooling, hence the name 'tell tale'

hi frosty thank you for your reply, but it is not the tell tale, that is on the other side which is a smaller pipe with water under pressure .This other pipe has small amounts of water coming from it And it has a what look's like a push fitting fitting the pipe to the cylinder head .

Then Im not sure ,however letting the air out at the top is a good idea.

You will have to locate another similar engine and have a look.
