    Second Part of our sudy about what happens when large monosailing yachts similar to the Bayesian are side hit by a 60+ knots wind burst when under bare mast, has already been published at the Spanish "Revista de Ingeniería Naval", June issue. First Part (posted in this thread some weeks ago) was about the aerodynamic study for the knock down and this Second Part is about the dynamics of the heeling and flooding.

    As a last remark we consider these yachts, prone to stay capsized if knocked down by a burst, should be provided with escape hatches located in the sides of the hull, so guests and crew in the cabins quarters can quickly escape.

    One thing I'm struck with looking at the photos as she was raised is that, much like the ETHAN ALLEN, LADY D, and STRETCH DUCK 7, the weather protection did nothing to prevent downflooding. It only functioned to trap the passengers.

    Yet the Builders (Perini Navi) of Bayesian were very quick to immediately jump on the bandwagon after the sinking and hurl serious and vicious accusations at the crew, saying it was all their fault - maybe this reaction was because they then realised that they had screwed up seriously in some of the design aspects of the vessel...... yet the design of the vessel was approved and 'signed off' by their Class Society.
    And when one screws up big time, very often the natural reaction is to go on the offensive, in an effort to try to cover's ones own metaphorical butt.
    How far does the blame go here now? The lawyers are going to have a field day.

    Hi chaps, Ive been away from the board for a while good to see some discussion on this Bayesian tragedy. Its a classic demonstration of a legal strategy of throwing mud and see what sticks. Its clear that the design is the major issue here, not the crew.

    True, but setting aside the keel down vs water depth vs wind speed issue (which could be construed as a poor command decision)....were people trapped below because there were not multiple ways to exit the compartment? Did the design, weather cover implementation, or crew action unknowingly trap people below? As designers we cannot blindly assume invincibility of a single factor à la TITANIC. This loss, much like the loss of the MV CONCEPTION or SV PRIDE of BALTIMORE (and for the grace of God the SV CONCORDIA) shows that there needs to be multiple, obvious, and unobstructed ways to exit the vessel quickly regardless of casualty.

    Yes, I agree a fundamental design element was overlooked or worse deliberately omitted. Crew and passenger egress pathways in an unrecoverable knockdown appears to be non- existent.

    Those of us who have ever assisted with compiling a manual for the RCD will know that a diagram of exit routes should be included.I suppose the size of the vessel and it's possible charter operations would have moved it into a commercial category and again,I would have expected signs to be present.
