    OAK Management, Inc. is seeking a Small Boat Program Coordinator to work with a government agency in order to establish an agency-level program to improve the management of their small research boats (up to about 82’ LOA).

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    1. Application and interpretation of the agency’s Administrative Order for management of small boats;
    2. Assisting or evaluating operational risk assessments and the associated operational risk management plans developed by or with the agency’s field activities that operate boats;
    3. Identifying, defining, and providing solutions to weaknesses or deficiencies in the management of small boats at all levels of the agency, from the field level to Senior Management;
    4. Raising awareness and developing abatement strategies for the unique risks in operating small research vessels;
    5. Developing initiatives to secure funding for various agency-wide boat management issues such as; centralized procurement of common outfitting and safety items, specialized or technical operator training, small boat program web site development, standardization of motorboat designs, web-based boat management and technically-oriented operator training software development, contract surveys by accredited or professionally recognized marine surveyors;
    6. Performing marine surveys;
    7. Interpretation of applicable regulation for various classes of research motorboats based on route, employment, and number of persons carried aboard;
    8. Making presentations to various groups within and outside of the agency regarding the management of small boats and the unique challenges presented by such a task;
    9. Coordinating inspection and marine engineering support within the agency
    10, Providing advice and guidance to any agency component that requests assistance on any matter pertaining to small boats.

    SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
    This position will be filled by an individual with professional maritime skills, knowledge of other maritime professions (boat builders, designers, operators, surveyors) and Government regulations (MARAD, USCG, DOI). Recognition or certification by professional societies or organizations (SAMS, ABYC, SNAME, NAMS) is highly desirable.

    ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
    Although classified as a land assignment, this position is expected to require travel at least once per month to various field activities.
