Why do some Wharrams have added keel towards the back?

Is this to solve a balance issue or to add lateral resistance, or both?

If you mean "dagger boards", as on some of the Pahi range,, they aid both with resistance (leeway) and balance with regards to some self steering ability.

Not referring to daggerboards, but to what appears to be just a retrofitted flat board that starts about midship on the keel and terminates further aft. I would just show a picture but I'm not sure if it's proper to share photos off the wharram website.

Sounds like you mean the "skeg", usually aids tracking and supports the lower rudder.

Low profile keel, for the purpose you previously stated.
