Will a 15hp plane it with 300lbs of me and my wife?

Hi,

I can't seem to find anything about this boat on the Internet! Nothing!

I was told that it is a Princess Marine boat and is 14 foot 11 inches long. I'm told my 4 stroke Yamaha 15 hp will plane it.

Can anyone tell me anything about it?

Ahhhhh, you best be careful.

 

I would say it will not plane with that much weight. I(145 pounds at the time) had a 15 hp(90 pounds) on a 160 pound boat and pulled a young skier(130 pounds) with his brother(150 pounds) on board but it was a tremendous effort for the skier to get up on plane. It took so long for him to get up on his skis he was exhausted by the time he got there. This was done on a 15' 9" version of the Folbot Sportabout.

 

You need to weigh the boat. Like the next time you go to the dump. Or if you're friends with a guy at the gravel pit or truck stop. It probably has the bottom filled with old polyfoam, and if that stuff is soaking wet, you'll be lucky to float! I ran a Yamaha 2 stroke 20 on a 16' that weighed about 375 pounds bare hull. It would plane out the motor, 100 pounds of crap, and three adults- call it 1250 pounds all up. That was at about 14 knots and barely up on plane. At 1000 pounds she'd do about 18 knots. She was over propped with the factory 11' pitch.

But if your hull is bone dry and you keep it that way, you should just barely make it with the right prop- probably about a 9". You'll need her to spool right up to make it. 5400 wot at hump speed. Handling won't be very good. You really want a 25 on that thing. Get a cheapo stick-on tach. I think I paid $15 for mine.

My money is on it not planing, or being pushed to the limit to get there, with the ideal propellor pitch. Probably needs 40hp, but 25 absolute minimum.

 

A 13ft boston whaler with a 20hp yamaha two stroke scoots right along with three people aboard. Perhaps 15 knots.

Takes a bit to get planing and the weight distribution must be correct..

One problem with a small engine is that it will always be running at full speed to achieve required performance. . Not good for the motor and not good for fuel economy. Engines like to run at 75 percent. I would put a bigger motor on your boat.
