I found an AI site that guaranteed the world and delivered that answer. The silicon brain estimated 86% accuracy.

The boat is a Tiki 30, plenty of adventures and an insight into personal strength like many solo sailors recieve. It had a lot of both upside and downside. I got to try some of Wharram's innovations, but it was a handful solo, especially in weather, though it got me through some wild conditions.

The scene is on the Pacific somewhere.

Indeed, not lava at all! Rather TAR, or BREA in Spanish. This pile of tar on the beach is not the Carpinteria Tar Pits, per se, but a more recent outwelling of goo that has since hardened. You need to take care when walking on the beach that you don't step into some recently extruded oil or tar, which you then track into your car's rug or your home's carpet. Ask me how I know!

Its more well-known cousin, the world-famous La Brea Tar Pits, 100 miles away in the middle of Los Angeles, are the final resting place for thousands of exquisitely-preserved fossils. The Carpinteria Tar Pits have long been mined for its asphalt and were subsequently filled with trash, so few fossils preserved from that location.

The reason Helmut's guess of Oil Pier Beach is so close, is that it's perhaps 6 miles away. There is an off-shore oil field (you can see the rigs from Carpenteria) and I suspect the crude oil was pumped to Oil Pier Beach. It is presumed to be the same oil field that supplies the tar for Carpenteria.
