and maps and aerial photos are such a delight, that sometimes its just about slowly 'flying' down likely coastlines until you find the spot. ;)

I suspect Tiny Turnip is just being polite now. :)

This harbor/city has a well-known mountainous backdrop, which is mostly just outside the upper (west) edge of the photo.

Three men held as prisoners on the island in the bay each eventually became president of the country.

Robben Island actually held 4 presidents.

In addition to Mandela there were Jacob Zuma, President of South Africa and leader of the African National Congress, Kgalema Motlanthe, South Africa's first Pedi president and Oliver Tambo, Fomer ANC President.

Thanks, but I'm too busy and have no ‘‘web fresh’’ digital pictures available.

I don't think Oliver Tambo was one of the prisoners on Robben Island or president of the country SA, so the three in the clue of IN seems to be right.

Yes, you are correct, Cape Town, South Africa is just a little north of Hout Bay, the OP's "Where Is This?" Robben Island, in Table Bay, is where a long list of "undesirables" have been held.

The classic view of Cape Town, looking south, shows Table Mountain in the background, whereas my photo made it harder to identify by not including much of Table Mountain. Hout Bay is further down the coast, just "above" Cape Town, while False Bay can be seen in the upper-left corner, as it also can in the original photo I posted.

I was curious why Wynand called this the Indian Ocean. Cape Town/Hout Bay is well west and north of Cape Agulhas, and even slightly north of the Cape of Good Hope (which you can see above as the west edge of False Bay), and thus, I would think, be well into the Atlantic Ocean?

The clue said president, but I did not notice it specified president of a country until now. Tambo was president of ANC but not of the country. as you correctly said.

Yes, I to think it's the Atlantic, maybe Wynand will show up to explain what was meant there 7 years ago . . :)

I've changed the Cape Agulhas link in the quote a bit as it was a little off (removed ‘‘Wikipedia’’ on the end of the URL).

Thanks for the info posted [IMG]

Thanks for noting the botched link. I've corrected it in my post as well. :)

    You are quite correct:).
However, many locals sees Capetown it as the divide between the two oceans although it is not the most southern point of the continent, which is Cape Agulhas which is quite a distance northwards up the east coat.

BTW, I knew all along it was Capetown because Im local but did not want to spoil the fun for others.
In your aerial picture of Capetown, my OP picture of Houtbay (taken from the north) can be clearly seen in the righthand corner top extending away from table mountain, although now seen from the south
