A yacht is bigger than a boat and a boat is smaller than a yacht.

A boat can be bigger then a yacht, in fact a boat can carry a yacht.

A yacht is a cruising vessel with 'comfortable' accommodation designed specifically as a non commercial live aboard. A yacht can be a ship too. Some of the Royal and presidential yachts have been exquisite small ships , Britannia is close to 400 ft and 5000 tonnes. At the other end of the scale Lin and Larry Pardy also live on a yacht.

Boats are everything else, that don't rate as a ship. That includes submarines. :)

Mind you these sorts of definitions come from the English and the admiralty has orders for the rig you wear on an admiralty yacht. Casual dress: sandals white shorts crisp white shirt and no medals is a rig ! What hope do lawyers have nailing down one of these definitions in a court !

We threw the English out for being too stuffy. Here we wear wife beater shirts and flip-flops. :)

I do not deny that you are obvious, like a big ole pimple on Pinocchio's nose.

Actually vessel boat and yacht are all defined by US law. See the previous post.
A vessel is any means of transportation on the water.

From Rule 3 of the Navigation Rules
and from 33 CFR 181 (standards for boat manufacturers)
So what these terms mean has to be taken in the context of the conversation. But as a practical matter, in Europe just about any pleasure boat is a yacht. In the US we tend to reserve the word yacht for the wealthy, because we all want be thought of as regular folks, and regular folks own boats, not yachts. But I might add, there are a lot of "Yacht Clubs" full of regular folks, and not very many "Boat Clubs", but the ones that do exist are also full of regular folks.

In my area its easy. There are no yachts or ships in the Great Lakes. Everything no matter how large or for what purpose is a boat. Such as a 1000 foot Ore Boat, a 300 foot Stone boat, a fish boat, a power boat, a sail boat, a trawler boat. :)

A submarine is a boat, and it can carry a 'nother boat. :)

All yachts are boats, but not all boats are yachts.

    Just my 3 cents :

"Yacht is any boat USED for pleasure (or travel of some VIP person(s))".
In this context, when President of USA did travel to Casablanca during WWII on board of newest battleship, this battleship was "yacht" for the time being...
    :)
