whats the best easy way to get mildew smell out of boat? what chemical can I pour on mat?

I'm riding shotgun in a Safeboat and its got a woven plastic mat that got wet and mostly stays wet and stinks. Removing it for proper cleaning doesn't seem to be in the cards. What can I just pour on it to get rid of mildew and smell?

I'm gonna bring some old bathroom rugs to stomp on and dry it out some, then hang the rugs to dry outside.

 

Germicide after water flush.

Conbrobium Mold Control. Works remarkably well. Looks and smells like water.

 

What type of mat? Got any pics?

 

You can also make your own version of concrobium with baking powder and/or washing soda. The idea is to rinse your mat (or whatever) in a mild alkaline solution like Concrobium or baking/washing soda and leave it on, do not rinse it off. Mildew does not like to grow in an alkaline environment. Acids like vinegar also work, but do not last long before they break down. I know guys who do buried log posts and they char the end of the log before burying it. The ash would make it alkaline. Interesting point.

 

Neat. I've heard of charing wood posts, but it never occurred to me it might be the alkalinity that helps.
