For one off parts, the most reliable release agent is pva, you can use Johnsons paste wax but beware of fish eyes. Give it a good amount of drying time before you gelcoat.
The mistake many people make even with proper mould release wax is putting on the layers too fast, the wax needs to dry between coats in order to build up a thickness, four coats one after the other is the same as one coat. Be patient and give it some time to harden between coats. I like TR and PLP waxes myself.

Mold release treaments will vary from person to person, but my favorite continues to be Johnsons Floor Wax applied over three or four days time and a light layer of sprayed PVA prior to gel coat application.
