    hy @ all!
    i need a little help:
i plan to modify the rudder on a j-29
    from unbalanced to balanced
because i wot less weather helm on reach courses
(make the work for the tiller pilot easier when sailing short handed)
my idea is to add a nose at the front of the rudder
    any comment pro - con
    thanks!

Maybe its better to remove some on the top?
It's difficult to add a nose without ruining the shape.

About 17% of the rudder area can be fwd of the hinge line.

Have you thought of just adding a small balanced trim tab and steering with that?

Would be lots quicker to try , and the AP can use its tiny steering loads to great advantage.

You can achieve the same effect by simply moving the top pintle forward a bit. This will rake the rudder forward, placing area at the tip ahead of the pivot line.

But if you are have heavy weather helm, balancing the rudder will reduce the force on the tiller and do nothing for performance because you will still be holding the tiller at the same angle to the centerline. You need to improve the balance of the boat by adjusting the rig.
