There's nothing fishy. Tom has been here for years and likes to spark debate about topics he is interested In. I can't see how that can be trolling or anything else. He is interested in other people's opinions and theorys that is all.

I guess it depends upon your definition of Trolling.

Sounds a lot like what I have been accused of when I was "trying to spark debate" or get a discussion going.

It sure meets the definition as I understand it. Probably just my lack of sensitivity. Or my unfortunate sarcasm.

It is an unproductive discussion, with no prospect of it ever being one, and it has got to 12 pages ? Go figure !

This is internet trolling in its purest form.

In this particular case (explanation of the buoyancy at the www.teachengineering.org site) - we can conclude that you got what you payed for.

Tom, quite frankly - what REALLY disturbs me is to learn that you have a customer who has asked you to design a boat, yet you don't even understand how the buoyancy works and how to obtain a hull with minimum draft.

You must be a terrific salesman.

Tom strikes me as a contrarian, who was attracted to a wacky explanation of how things float, that thumbs it's nose at orthodoxy, unfortunately it is nonsense, and he must realise that himself. It is now an exercise of laying a smoke-screen so he isn't seen to be too foolish or naive for swallowing the misguided ideas.

For me, it's the annoying teacher/student platform that gives the impression of trolling. Also, this doesn't seem to be a quest for specific answers so much as a promotion disguised as a vague learning adventure.

I don't see where opinions are even asked for about this supposed project for a supposed customer. The OP's keyboard doesn't have a question mark as far as I can tell.

yes the preaching attitude mixed with a riddle/quiz AND the fact that when someone reduces the argument to a very factual concise question the OP will ignore it and grab a random tangent - like starting a thread with a specific theoretical dilemma but later dodging it and starting to talk about client needs.

Like this is the first time this has happened? Glad I recognized the trend and stayed out of this. Anyway, you have seen the same thing.

Nothing to be learned or taught here. Old Arch has spun over so many times that he is no longer recognizable.

oh Tom, I totally agree that I should know better, as I said it can be seen that we (who think we are rational) are vulnerable and get sucked in.
