I would very much like to build a fibber glass hull rib. I have built wooden and glass boats but not a rib. I was a member of the Severn Area Rescue Association Lifeboat in the UK when I was younger. I would very much would like to build them a Rib about 5 to 6 meters long. Perhaps a deep v or something built for speed. Please could you help me purchase some plans for this project. Thanks Nicholas

I would think that a one off rescue rib would be built of Aluminum.

A rescue crafts design, construction and fit out is rigorously controlled. You should contact a NA who specializes in these purpose built craft.

    Perhaps try Alnmaritec

At 5 meters, you may want to look at "inflatable racing catamarans" for ideas.

Market value for a RIB is higher than other boats which gives some viability. I am still highly skeptical whether you can build a RIB cheaper than buying one used. There are not many homebuilt RIBs. The difficulty of government / emergency use accepting a homebuilt is another difficulty.

I understand the value of inflatables - you can deflate them and put them in a small space and the flexibility softens the ride. RIBs aren't clear to me - the value is just to have a large rub rail/fender?

The continuous fender is perfect for a tender.
RIBs have more flotation than non RIBs and it's located up high to keep a swamped boat floating level and high.
The flotation is also easy to inspect being on the outside.
