A lot of mass media hype, however I have worked and done a lot of recreational fishing in those waters and it isn't an ideal location to be drifting out to sea.

The point west of where they set off from is Cape Naturaliste, and it marks where generally calm Geographe Bay becomes the often violent Indian Ocean, with the edge of the continental shelf not terribly far offshore, rare for the WA coast, and the even more violent Southern Ocean only a few NM to the south. Plus the nearest land in the direction they were drifting is Africa and that coastline is prime White Pointer (great white) territory.

I take my hat off to the kid for a huge effort in probably big seas, and the mother for sending him. She needs to invest in a waterproof VHF and an EPIRB because Huey won't give them a second free pass.
