Whale breaches, lands on boat

Yup... giving whales a good berth seems to be a good idea. It's illegal to approach anywhere near "right whales" where I'm from. I've had a "pilot whale" surface about 50 feet ahead of my bow, in a very small channel, then swim right under my keel and surface just astern of the boat. This, in a channel you could hardly fit a second boat through.

I was very near land and was scared the whale would be injured on my keel.

It seems they like to play with boats sometimes and don't know their own strength.

I've had pods of dolphins play very near my boat in tight channels, such as the waters east of Cayo Costa. I was very happy they did not contact my propeller.

I guess the Right Whale had the Right of Way

I watched the Home Video on TV and it simply is a case of the Sailboat being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

    Bad Mojo.

He was on a Starboard tack and as everyone knows The sailing rule that dictates that a sailing vessel on starboard tack is the stand on vessel is as old as any other regulation.

So the Wale was clearly at fault.

Here is a pic of My Boat the 30 ft "Rainbow Chaser" upon which I would transport six to 8 18 ft Sea Kayaks out 10 to 20 miles
Offshore out of Gloucester on one of my Famous Kayack Whale Watch Trips
    on Stellwagon Bank.

Thw Whale is a FinBack. We also have Humpbacks & Porpouses as well as Right Whales around NewEngland.

I like whales. But I can't muster up any enthusiasm for hanging around them up close and personal in a kayak... to each his own, I guess.

    Ooh sei can you see?

    There's a whale beneath thee,

And the way he doth blow,

    Means that you better roow.
