welded and unwelded strength of Aluminum?

    There are not issues with welding the most common 6000Txx to the 5000 series if you want to use standard extrusions within the vessel.
    Yes you can weld up extrusions BUT if you were to weld a T, with say 2 flat bars you will not end up with a straight length due to the distortion that such welding can induce into a long structure.

    The slight additional cost of using a purchased extruded profile will be absorbed by trying to build them your self
