Polyester over vinylester resin?

Will polyester adhere to vinylester resin? I want to apply VE to a balsa core edge to seal it, thinking it will soak in better and seal out rainwater more reliably. Then follow up with poly resin and cloth and poly fairing compound.

    Thanks

It will bond fine they're 100% compatible

Sealing it with VE prior to coating with a polyester laminate won't do anything to help waterproof it. It will be no different than doing the same thing with polyester resin.

    OK. Thanks.

I don't have too much experience with VE. Unless the first VE coats soak into the balsa deeper or bond better to it, there is no reason to use VE.

Not true. It is somewhat Formula specific, but polyester does not act a silly an effective vapor barrier vinylester does. It's the same reason that poly boats often get a vinyl top coat, in order to slow down water into the laminate stack.

Epoxy is better than either of them, but has gelcoat bonding issues.

Sealing the balsa in this location with VE will make no difference.

VE helps in long term immersion applications when used as a skin. Sealing foam or balsa above the waterline with VE will be of no help when used like this.

Migration of water through a laminate and causing rot is a rarity. Water reaching a core through a screw hole is the real concern, and it makes no difference what resin is used in this this failure mode.
