Metacentric heights

    OK you all know what i'm referring to vessel stability - GZ's righting lever and so on.

    When I stidied for my marine quals, we had to come to grips with this arcane science idea of metacentric heoght and how oading might affect it and so on.

    The instructor had a neat little flat plywood cutout "puzzle" of the front on view of a boat hull which was pivoyed and coonnected with strings and as you added weight it would sit lower in the water and it's roll moment would alter to the point where you could make her lose balance and tip over...

    If you added weight down low - it would becom stiffer and as you added weight hgh up on deck the roll moment increased etc...

    It was a fantastic teaching aid.

    Dont ask me how in heck it was made or who made it coz i don;t know - but my question is this.

    When trying to explain it on the net tokeen boaters - it's a difficult subject.

    Theres any numbers of excellent references on the net to articles by all manner of naval architects etc explaining it.

    Does anyone KNOW of an interactove web site or gif type thingy that could be used to demsontrate the same principles?...smething where the user can add weights etc either higher or lower and alter the vessels righting characteristics on screen as a teaching aid?

    I find it hard to believe there isn't such an interactive model online somewhere?

    Has anyone come acrioss such a tyhing per chance who could point me in the right direction please?

    no, i dont KNOW eighter were to find such a web based graphic calculator but did ask Fiona Sinclair who made the hull resistance calculator for such a GZ gadget, she replyd something like it could be possible but boats CG, hullform etc make it more individual and complicated, better use programs or do it by hand, and this nice resistance calculator belonged by the book. plenty other web based (boat) calculators in my faforites but i too stay posted for that GZ one.

    There is one available for DC techs on a US Navy site. I don't know if non-"mil" addresses can access it, nor do I know a non-"mil" path, but you might do some searching
