    Hi,

How does the best value of reef and flat are calculated in a VPP? Is there an optimisation process testing all value of reef and flat (very time consuming). Or is reef related to apparent wind speed?

    Thanks

    Hi Nico,

I suppose both are related to heeling angle rather then AWS. As in real life you'd start reefing and flattening when the heel gets too large, the wind gets too strong for your full sailplan (at that course). Bringing down the sails, as does flattening, reduces the heeling moment.
I think because of the way reef and flat are modelled in most vpp's - which is quite arbitrary - an optimization is not done very often. Anyone else with ideas about this?

    Pedro.
