what just happenned to Le Cam?

Ok, found it. He collected a fishing net on his keel and had to go scuba. News says he is underway. Race tracking has him as last place. What's with that?

    Vendee

    From Scuttlebutt tonight:

    Speed Record

It was a record breaking weekend, with Jean Pierre Dick smashing the 24 hour singlehanded monohull record of 468.72 nm (19.53 knots) set by Alex Thompson in 2003. Dick established the new standard on December 1 of 502.53 nm in twenty-four hours, averaging speeds of 20.9 knots (subject to ratification of the World Speed Sailing Record Council).

what a shame... sanso on board acciona did not make it into the same weather system as the leaders...
    he was so close!

dropping back now, but the leading group has also a high to engage, which might give them some troubles and sanso a possibility to gain on them...
    fingers crossed! ;)

gabart on macif has stopped and dropped from the ranking - now listed as NL...
no news yet about the cause...

false alarm - back in the race in 2nd position...
    most probably communication issues...

    Question

You guys have gotten me hooked on following the race, but probably not as closely as some.

Why did everyone sail so far south of the Crozet gate, only to come up on the wind ro make the eastern most point?

When I've looked at the progress intermittently over the last few days I didn't see a weather reason for this course.

    What did I miss?

At first blush, it looks like Stamm headed south too soon. I wonder how they will handle that? If these guys can plot a course though the eye of a needle a week out, they know what latitude they are at. Tracking plot might be based on half hour data or some such. Skippers need a big, fat send-button to mash when they cross a gate:D

Flashing lights like the AC boats telling them they are cool?

(edit. tracking has fixed it now, he's ok. VMG was negative and ranking was wrong for a while)

    The weather?

There is a extensive thread at SA of the 2012 Vendee Globe where routing and weather is explained also a lot of inside info about skippers and boats.

it comes even better: over 545 nm within 24 hrs...
"The youngest skipper in the race who, remarkably, is a rookie to solo sailing in the Southern Ocean has set a set a truly electric pace – consistently at a level which none of his rivals have matched – to send the 24 hours solo monohull distance record soaring to a seemingly stratospheric 545.3 miles over the 24 hours to 1500hrs UTC this afternoon."

Holy crap, "545.3 miles over the 24 hours". That's just amazing (22.72mph average). He must really be riding some serious westerlies. Very fitting for a southern ocean sleigh ride here at Christmas time.

I will be there this time next year and will be really looking forward to it. The new Clipper 70 boats aren't as fast, but the new design is quite a bit faster than the old Clipper 68 hulls. We've been told the new hulls will exceed 30 knots with no problem.

The Clipper yachts are built quite tough...typically doing several circumnavigations prior to being sold. Hats off to RKJ for starting this great race.

    more records broken...
it was not only gabbart but all the other front-runners have maintained incredible speeds over the last 24 hrs...
"545.3 nautical miles is the distance covered by Fraçois Gabart in 24 hours - between Sunday and Monday (4PM rankings) - at an average speed of 21.1 knots. The MACIF skipper has therefore beaten the record Jean-Pierre Dick had set on December 1 (502.53 miles in 24 hours). Earlier this month, the Virbac Paprec 3 skipper had also beaten his own record (516.9 miles) and so had Bernad Stamm (506.9 miles).

François Gabart has also become the fastest skipper since the start of this Vendée Globe with 10,763 miles covered in 30 days at an average speed of 14.9 knots, which is almost two knots faster than Michel Desjoyeaux throughout the entire 2008-2009 Vendée Globe!"

this could really become the fastest vendee for years... what with all the one-design rumours about...

    go boys!
    and stay safe... ;)
