Aluminium Mast

I have a 30ish foot extruded aluminum mast I am going to need to repaint what method and materials should I use here, most of the previous paint is off so I will need to rub it down but what should I use to prime it "etching primer"? then a coat or two of epoxy paint? thanks in advance for tips and advise

I'm about to do the same thing

My mast has Awl-Grip in generally fair condition with areas of blistering. I plan on doing the following:

• Mount all new hardware to be added (Drill/cut holes).
• Unmount all hardware
• Fill holes no longer to be used
• Sandblast blisters.
• Prep with Awl-Grip Alumiprep 33 and Alodine 1201.
• Coat immediately with Awl-Grip 545 to seal.
• Fair as necessary. with Awl Quick.
• Sand entire mast
• Topcoat with awlgrip.
• Re-attach hardware.

Although I've used Awl-Grip, I've never done a mast before so this may not be the best way. By drilling and tapping the new holes before painting, they get coated with a layer of paint to help prevent corrosion.

 

Thanks for the tip where do you buy that from though, also where the spreaders which are stainless incidently are attached to the mast and for that matter the boom there are aluminium mounting plates as you may be aware they are there to take the wear and strain etc. my question is can these be purchased and where from? some one mentioned oh you just make them up from aluminum but if they are available at a reasonable price where do you get them from?

 

You should be able to find the Awl-Grip product through a local Boat painting Business. Go to awlgrip.com, as there is a lot of information there which should be read carefully.

My guess is that those plates were fabricated for your mast and are not available off the shelf.
