"If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind.
Were an opinion a personal possession of no value except to the owner; if to be obstructed in the enjoyment of it were simply a private injury, it would make some difference whether the injury was inflicted only on a few persons or on many.
But the peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it.
If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error."
John Stuart Mill excerpt from 'On Liberty' ~ 1859
    English Economist, Author (1806–1873)

Out of sheer contrariness? Demonstrating rebellion? Or in defiance "I will not be ruled!"?

It is funny when you hire people to represent you but they think you hired them to rule over you.

The farther people are removed from those who vote for them, the less likely they are to know the voter and (more importantly) be known by them, the more inevitable this seems to become.

The old saying "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time." helps to explain my contention. When almost no one knows you or even has a chance to know you they don't know your BS ... or any improbable lack thereof.

Politicians can count on the first part of the old saying time after time to help them win office (we really need to greatly reduce the size of US House districts, let them rent out Redskins' stadium to convene Congress if that's what it takes). Conversely, the last, if you consider the "all" would be their legislative peers that sent them would also know them, shows wisdom in appointing Senators (probably should increase their numbers to some multiple of 3 per State anyways as well).

2 per state is the right senatorial amount but they should be selected by the elected state legislatures and not by the electorates directly. The electorates should only elect the representatives in the house directly. That was the original arrangement until some thought they had more wisdom than the founders.

the constitution in plain language says, the senate represents the state governments, and the states can't relinquish that, nor can it be deprived from the states.

the amendment making senators elected by popular vvote is unconstitutional

"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself.”
