Upholstering seats.

Looking for input on upholstering my boat seats.

I have a 1/2" ply panel and 1 1/2" foam. I'm planning to do a simple wrap with a "pleated" vinyl. I will most likely fold and tuck the corners. This way I have a seamless piece of material over the entire cushion. I was thinking about SS screws and finish washers on the underside as a means of attachment.

Does anybody have experience with what works in this situation?

 

The usual method is to use staples. You can get 1/2" stainless staples at the hardware store. Electric staplers are not too expensive.

 

Use ' monel ' staples to resist corrosion.

 

Where are you getting those? I can only get stainless.

 

I got some down at the local hardware store. They cater to a lot of shrimpers and so have some marine stuff, but I didn't think they were too uncommon.

 

I use both monel and stainless and the exact brand and type shown above most of the time, from my local Ace hardware store. Apparently I'm the only one that buys the monel staples, fortunately I know the owner real well and he special orders stuff for me all the time, so doesn't mind carrying a case on his shelf for the next decade, just for me. It's nice being a local boy.

 

1 1/2" foam is too thin for comfort.
Better use 2" medium density with a 1/2" sheet of low density on top and folded around the lower part. Your seats will look better that way.
