Steam engine powered 40' cutter?

    Last weekend, I was at the Madisonville Wooden Boat Festival and saw this 1904 U.S. Navy cutter.

    It seems to be in process of restoration. There is no boiler. I think a boiler would be installed just forward of the steam engine. The propeller shaft does not appear to be connected to the steam engine.
