What is the most reliable (used) outboard motor in the 115-150 HP range? I am looking for a used outboard to power my 18' cobia sportster. My budget is in the $1500 (or Lower) range. What years from what manufacturers were reliable, easy to maintain, etc...

This post will be mostly opinion, so any surveys, or reviews would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

The Black Stack from Fon-du-lac :D

In your price range, it's hard to beat a Merc 115. Often, the best way to get them is buy a package with a crappy boat. Toss the boat or use it for a planter, and then and sell the trailer.

    $$$$ in yer pocket

He's right. Buy a clapped out boat, then you've got controls, cables, etc....I just did the same and got a good running 50 Evinrude, boat, trailer, plus a brand new Eagle fishfinder (bonus!) for $1,000. The boat is going away tho, just wanted the motor/ trailer.

If anyone were trying to start a fight, there would have been a claim by now that a FICHT was the best pick!
(Those of you who are familiar with FICHT will certainly agree that they're not exactly reliable)

What I meant was, this is like asking which is better MAC or Windows, or Chevy or Ford! It's too emotional to answer subjectively. Too much brand loyalty.
