Can any one tell me the adavantages of side Trawling over stern trawling..

eventhough side trawling has stability problems. it is still widely preferred.. what could be the possible reason for this??

Seaworthyness of the boat? traditional (all fishermen are very conservative)?

    navarch_hish,
What kind of trawling do you mean? Do you mean pair trawling? On what fisheries is side trawling preferred?
Around here (Galicia, Spain) all trawlers are stern trawlers since a long time ago, as this system is safer and easier to work with.
Old side trawlers have been either scrapped or converted to long-liners.
    Cheers

Yes but big 'slab ar**ed' boats get pooped easily! give me a pink stern anyday - nothing wrong with a transom as long as you are moving, but stop to haul and that ramp can soon get a lot of water up it - sunk a few boats too! Smaller boats are not too bad (no ramp) but you still have the hatches open to get the fish below and the open back can get interesting (plus the traditional style of course)
