toyota 4.2 diesel marinisation

    can any give some info on how to marinise a toyota 4.2 turbo diesel engine this motor would be used in 26 ft savage lancer .cheers

    The first and most important step is finding suppliers for the following parts:

    -water cooled exhaust manifold and heat exchanger
    -bell housing that fits or can be adapted to fit a marine gearbox
    -engine coupler to replace the clutch assembly
    -engine supports

    The actual list of things you need is much longer, but these are the critical parts. If you cannot obtain these items of have them made for you, there is no need to discuss any details.
    If you intend to do the job yourself, you also need the skill and equipment to machine, weld, drill, do plumbing etc. because not all necessary parts are available off the shelve.

    jeff if you can find a wrecked yanmar 300 hp diesel, they are based on the 1hz so all the ancillarys should bolt straight up. i think mercruiser had them as well. i don't know of anyone making kits but you could try diecon or kincaids in melbourne. i have just got a 130 hp volvo diesel stern drive that is going into a lancer next week. it will only do about 13 knots but will be a lot cheaper to run than twin 318's

    also you need to go to stern drive or a prop pocket . twin 6's won't go in a lancer because the freshwater tank stops the starboard engine. plus the front of the rocker cover sits above deck level.

    Yamaha, Yanmar, and perhaps Nani as well all use that engine in their marine range. Merc/CMD don't. Their 4.2l engine is from an Italian base and very different. Yamaha actually build them for Toyota if I understand correctly. You would need to check, but I suspect the parts you need are probably available from a marine engine wrecker. You will need:
    Raw water pump (could be from any equivalent engine or a generic Jasco etc and just belt driven), heat exchanger, intercooler, water cooled exhaust manifold, mixer elbow, and possibly a different turbo (not sure if they are water cooled or not). All bar the manifold and possibly the turbo could be aftermarket or from a different engine of similar hp. Bought new the costs would probably be prohibitive. Picked up from a wrecker etc it might be a good deal. I do remember that Yanmar had issues with these engine dropping valves for a few years (maybe early 2000's), so you might want to research that a little as it is possible that the same valves are in the same generation car engines, but possibly not under the same pressure as in marine use.

    Whitepointer - I could be wrong, but they would have had to be back in the early 1990's or earlier, and I think that was D'tronic time which was a different engine series again. Since at least the mid 1990's the 4.2l Mercruiser/CMD diesel has been based on the VM Motori (VMC?) engine. We have one of these in one of our boats and it is completely different to the Toyota engine, with the Toyota a much better design IMHO.

    you are right, i confused the d tronic with a yanmar, i think it might have been a bmw.

    The 4.2 Toyota is also used as the basis of the Nanni 6cyl range.

    This engine has Toyota written all over it. I doubt if Yanmar made them for Toyota. The aftercooler is an arm and a leg , dont even ask how much is the copper heat exchanger made in New york.

    The very very early 4 valve had collet problems due to exhaust valves sticking usually on or near the warranty period complicating matters.

    But that is 10 years gone at least . The 250HP with 2 valves never had this , yes the turbo is much bigger and is water cooled a mixer elbow alone is 850 dollars.

    The Toyota is the 1HD engine used in the Landcruiser.

    Ive ran 2 of these for the last 10 years they are finicky engines with crank and piston splash jet lubricated and hellish expensive oil filter arrangement and on the 2 valves they adjustable with shims in a very silly way.

    I would be reluctant to buy another especially for hard work. They have lots of external pipes that will eventually need replacement which is what Yanmar are hoping and engineer will have fun making all these bits of stuff up.

    But very lively engine, love to rev and would be great in a vehicle which of course is what they were for.

    DPA pump is a ***** to get at and off but has pre and post boost adjustment. Again great for a car.
