Tomahawk: Peoples Foiler?

Jon, the pictures show a fin sticking down below the main foil-so if the main foil retracts it will still draw -what-about a foot? Since the boat seems able to be sailed with veal heel-like a Moth-could that fin be eliminated or the main foil lowered slightly for shallower draft to make it easier to beach sail?
See "Foiler Design" for more pictures of the Howes foil:

I would prefer to wear out the tip of the little fin than to scrape the whole bottom of the wing.

Upwind Performance

Jon, how does upwind performance compare with a Moth in various conditions?

News Flash:two person Tomahawk(?) from Ovington

Check out this list of projects Ovington is working on:(this photo was taken by "presuming ed" on sailing anarchy)

I had a look at the Tomahawk and it is a very tidy boat.It helps to have a builder with the credibility of Ovington associated with the project.I had a camera with me and pointed it at the foils,in the hope that it will be of interest the results are attached.

Thanks a lot-first picture of the rudder foil. Someone on another forum thought that the rudder foil was "borrowed" off an RS600FF-twist grip and all.
Did it appear to you that the main foil was retractable?

Doug.

If you are going to nick and post my photos, the very least you could do is credit me. It's called common courtesy. But then I suppose I'm not surprised.

Photos from the London Dinghy Show here and here.

I humbly apologize and have corrected the post. You'll notice that on SA under "Two Person Foiler" I DID credit you! Oversight on my part here.....

Jumping Foiler

I've posted this on SA as well and am looking forward to Jon's comments either here or there:
Jon, it seems to me that one of the great "recreational" possibilities for a "peoples" foiler might be jumping the boat intentionally. From what I'm begining to understand about your foil it would be terrific for re-entering without a crash-am I correct?

Moths don't jump-intentionally- because they have wands. When a Moth gets high enough for the main foil to come out of the water the bungee pulls the wand all the way forward raising the back end of the flap resulting in a virtually instantaneous crash as the boat re-enters. This kind of crash happens often, particularly with bow mounted wands, in conditions where there are waves.
The Howes foil is likely(in my opinion) to open up the exploration of jumping for the pure fun of it.

From the 2008 Worlds ,Moths exhibiting the exact behaviour described above:

According to a guy that has one the Moth and foilboard are nearly identical in weight. I seriously doubt any Mothie would try a jump(w/o mods) with the knowledge of the crash sure to result.

Doug; the 'hawk foils look like they are designed to work well sucking air, probably there is enough lift from the lower surface - at higher speed I guess the top is ventilted anyway.. moth all of a sudden has only 1/3 available lift when ventilated. probably they would work fine for jumping... the monofoil is made for jumping.
Jumping skiffs would require some skillz if you don't make aero control surfaces.
Have you thought about how much area would be needed to replace the wet T rudder with aero surfaces?

Since the discussion has turned to foiling boards I have attached a couple of files of the board foils that were at the dinghy show in the vicinity of the foiling Moths. There is the obvious family resemblance to the Tomahawk foils. It won't take a genius to work out that the board was standing on end.
