    Pretty hard to be categorical about steel cabin being too heavy, without knowing what gauge of material went into it. Maybe the enemy was only firing rubber bullets during its "phoney" war experience !

    Whatever you do, get a real surveyor who has the equipment to check hull thickness. Not some guy who "knows tons about boats."

    Many boat owners, especially steel boat owners, have absolutely no idea what kind of condition there boat is in.

    New paint on a steel boat is scary, unless done by a pro with receipts. Getting paint to stick is not always easy, and to do it right is a huge amount of work on steel. If you have to peel off the last owners crappy paint job it is even worse, especially when you start finding all the bondo holding the hull together.

    Besides all the previous good considerations, the boat in the OP is plain ugly... Too ugly for $15,000 .

    That price is reasonable for a boat like that.
    Then you'll have to find an engine and whatever else is missing or destroyed.
    Then the moorage, utilities,...etc.

    Living on a boat that size while you work on it is kinda nice. I've done it. Best peaceful sleeps I ever had in fact.

    It's gonna take awhile doing it a stick at a time. But it's doable and you have a pretty good cruiser for most oceans.
    Eat fish and Sea birds every day for the rest of your life. Free Food eh?

    That boat is fiberglass over wood.... sounds heavy.
    At least steel can be cut out and fixed quickly and cheaply.

    Plus with the shipping to the prairies, it would end up costing 15,000$ anyways.

    Eating those sea-birds does not have great appeal. Reports from stranded seafarers is that great hunger is required to overcome the sheer unpalatability of most of them. Then there is that old poem about the albatross.....:p

    This is one of the great enduring legends of steel boat ownership, yes steel is easy to weld, but once there is an interior attached to it the amount of work required to modify or repair a steel boat can be huge.

    Yachts are a lot different then a steel barge.

    Both myself and my neighbor in the marina just re-did our decks. Mine are plywood and glass his are steel. He spent easily double the time and the work was far less pleasant. Imagine working steel in your living room, that's what re-doing a steel boat is like if it has an interior.
