There are no emotions in engineering, only facts.
One cannot control the 'feelings' of those reading a factual post.

Therein lies your dilemma.

There are emotions in the forum though. They are stronger on members that can't accept the laws of physics. For example, that 1 electric HP is equal to 1 ICE HP. There are quite a few silly statements with made up units and definitions to prove the point.

You can't compare Electric HP to ICE HP. You have to use lbs of thrust vs ICE HP. Everyone knows that.

I like the idea of a bit of silly levity from time to time. It makes things interesting and encourages interest in the forum.
As I implied earlier, proas were the first thing that came to mind when I saw silly...
Again, Russel Brown's proa that defied Cape Horn being the exception.

I had assumed The Marquess of Queensberry Rules covered everything but the were merely an addition to the existing rules.

Isn't a proa just a double ender to the extreme ? Many hulls could benefit from a rudder at the bow; might save on having to gybe when she won't tack. (Get around you B...). I would suggest the latest foilers were not quite boats most of the time, and deserve their own category, especially how they can impact their crews when they fall off the foils. Most boats only stop so quick when they hit something large, like a reef or a sun fish.

Currently if a post is way off topic it may be split into its own thread or moved to the All Things Boats & Boating forum for example. But it's a balance. Splitting or moving too many posts can create more problems, discontinuity, lost opportunity for reply, hurt feelings, etc. In practice, at this volume, I'm not sure that adding a categoryfor silly posts would solve more problems than it would create.

On sailboatowners.com there are a couple of threads dedicated to "Funny Friday" posts. Of course, plenty of contributors post on non-Fridays, just like they post pictures when they feel like it, into Photo Wednesday's thread.

However, maybe by having a whole category for silly posts we could have multiple threads going about things like:

Running across the ocean
or,

a yacht made from plastic bottles or,

a homemade submarine or,

a giant pumpkin turned into a boat.
