    Excerpts:

Westlawn Alumn Manages Cruise Ship Repairs

Initially hired as a draftsman at Sea Level Marine in March 2012, Westlawn graduate Ben Dodarell was quickly was given additional responsibilities. Today, he is project manager on cruise-ship interior modification and repairs for Sea Level Marine, with responsibilities that include estimating, design presentations, concept renderings, purchasing, production drawings, as well as project management. He works on these vessels both at the dry dock and in service onboard the vessel as well as at Sea Level Marine's location in Miami.

    New Westlawn Textbook on Propellers

Westlawn Institute has introduced a new textbook and reference manual on propellers. Titled Propellers: Form Function, Selection, Speed & Powering and Problem Solving, the new book was written by naval architect Dave Gerr, the author of the industry-standard reference, Propeller Handbook, published by International Marine/McGraw-Hill, in 1989.

A Brief History of Sailing Multihulls - Part 2
    By François Chevalier

After discussing the origins of multihulls with the pirogues in Oceania and with 19th-to-early-20th-century racing multihulls, let us delve into the post-war catamarans. Out of hundreds of beach catamarans developed in this period, with some built in a few numbers locally and with others seeing worldwide success, we will shortlist only a few here. While the history of catamarans has already been told by others, the idea here is to relate the evolution of hull shape through a couple of models which have characterized production.

    Battery Installation 101
    By Ed Sherman

The photo shown here raises some interesting points about modern battery installations:

The grey batteries in the back of the photo are AGM batteries, which are defined as "immobilized electrolyte" batteries within ABYC Standard E-10, which addresses battery installations. This is an important consideration when we look at or consider design criteria for a modern battery installation, but I'm afraid this builder missed the mark with what you see in the photo.
