To give Ludde his due, the first Nicorette (which was also a cut and shut job from an older boat) survived the continuous bashing in the 2000 Hobart and won line honours.

Well, it seems the AZDictionary agrees, these things aren't foilers in their opinion either.

It's somewhat arrogant for you to correct the terminology of an expert actually involved in developing hydrofoil technology. But not surprising.

    CQS DSS Foil Assist

An "expert" wouldn't have made such a ridiculous claim as Gladwell did.

Foil with a low dipping creates a large wave resistance.

Konstanty, what do you mean by "Foil with a low dipping"?

I think about foil near surfage of water.

    Sydney-Hobart--DSS equipped Super Maxi CQS

Thanks. Normally a foil works efficiently from a depth of one chord. A properly designed DSS foil works both as a foil and a planing surface and has been proven effective over many years.

It seems Gladwell is not actually involved in hydrofoil development, so I was wrong about that. However he is a very experienced sailor with a number of NZ National Championship wins and has represented his country at international level. He is also a current Director at Yachting New Zealand, so very close to real world sailing and high performance boats.

The Round White Island race was hardly a competitive fleet for a super maxi. Chalk this one up as a bit of a shake down cruise, good luck to the crew and let's see what happens on Boxing Day.

Planing or foiling - that is the question.
