Using polyester resin as a varnish.

I just made some dinghy chocks to go on the aft deck. I dont know what wood they are made in. The missus said use resin so I did as I was told.

It looks like varnish and --well may be a good idea.

Will it be more lasting than varnish or do you think it will peal off.

good idea BUT she shudda thinned it 60% first coat, so it would soak in, hey you are on deright track

 

Ive thinned resin before and it didnt go off.

The missus said it would be better than varnish --she must have seen some one doing it over the other side of the Marina. So not a bad idea then?

 

it is a very good idea. We alway did same with epoxy, thinned with UNIVERSAL thinners

i varnished a ply console with poly resin frosty. it yellowed and started peeling after 6 months.

 

Polyester on wood requires a primer for adhesion.
I was further told (but could not find a proof) that PE resin attacks and destroys Lignin, which is the basic material of the wood cell.

For the matter of EP resin: Slightly off topic, but with excellent adhesive features, there is no need for thinner. But UV stability must be considered; EP needs a protective coating.

On a lighter side, Frosty: If I would have heard to my missus, I meanwhile would have been shipwrecked many times...
Not meant as an offense though: our missus' are surely great persons and highly specialised in other fields where you or I would fail.

 

Well its done now and looks ok,--good enough for dinghy chocks. Gonna sikaflex them to the aft deck today. I had made some brackets but I dont want to drill. I thought sika would be good enough.
