The Enigma of the Aerofoil: Rival Theories in Aerodynamics 1909-1930, by David Bloor. Univ. of Chicago Press, 2011.

This is a book about aerodynamics, history, and the sociology and philosophy of science, all done to the highest academic standards. It traces the development of aerodynamic theory as a dispute between British and German scientists, which was also a dispute between mathematical physicists and pragmatic engineers.

I found it fascinating and recommend it to anyone interested in these topics. I also recommend brushing up on your calculus and differential equations as Prof. Bloor doesn't stoop to the "math for dummies" approach when explaining the issues in question :)

    Cheers,

    Earl
