Hi all, has anyone put a subaru engine in their boat? I would like to put 2 of them in my build coupled to outdrives and would really like to talk to someone who has done it. These engines will fit below my rear deck with no problem. Also I have had 4 Subaru cars and really like their engines. I can handle the exhaust system and cooling and marinization does not seem to complicated. Thanks..........

The Subaru engine is used in some small light or experimental aircraft.

The folks at EAA should be able to assist you in figuring out how many HP can be used and for how long.

Id 40- 70HP at about 3000rpm would be in your ballpark , they might be a good choice, but check with EAA.org first.

A flat engine in a boat seems not very ideal. Especially a twin w ODs. Exhaust manifolds would need to be serviced by feel and service space on the sides of the engines would be really cramped.

What is the advantage? It would seem to me that the inline engine would be far more appropriate and easier to deal with.

I fly behind an EA81 subaru. Beautiful engine but you have two exhaust risers for 4 cylinders. Not exactly optimal.

In WoodenBoat, volume 134 there is an article about marinizing and installing a Subaru engine.

I have a EG33 flat-6 subaru, and was planning on putting it into my 16ft jetboat. It just didn't fit very well because of how wide it is. So I would agree they are probably not the best layout for a boat. In a car, the lower COG is great.
I'm planning on putting the EG33 in my porsche boxster. :)
I went back to my 12a rotary engine plan for the jetboat.
These are lightweight, compact, and powerful, and NO, they DON'T get horrible fuel mileage vs other engines, they do output slightly more pollution.

we had a 13b rotary and it was to thirsty, cool engine though. rasor if you can find it there were some issues of wooden boat that ran a competition for a runabout designed for a subaru engine, the winner was an excellent little boat that ran an ea82 through a tooth belt reduction.
