stringers....need some help

If you go through a stack of 2x12's, you'll quickly notice that several are nearly perfect; straight grained and knot free. These are the ones you want.

 

do i want 2x12's or 2x10's ? I guess the 2x12's can be cut down

 

Any width will do, so long as they're selected from long (16') stock. I use 2x10's and 2x12's because these boards have to come out of older trees, which yields tighter and straight grains, that have fewer defects. The other advantage of these long boards is you can rip them down the middle and have more stable lumber, often quarter sawn if you pick the right board.

 

Once you take the cap off and the deck and stringers out, you'll have to be careful to support the hull good and to not lose the shape of the hull. Roller supports can cause problems, sides can sag out.

 

i plan on doin one stringer at a time so i can keep structure.

is painting over the epoxy a must? and what type of paint is used?

 

I need someone to answer this question asap i didn't think about it till now. Do i need to get some "tape" cloth? should i use 1708 for tape or somethin lighter if i need it?

 

Sorry for the frantic million questions im in the middle of ordering everything and need some help with the cloth. I ordered dbm1708 with mat backing. I have read it sucks of resin. Since i am using epoxy is there another cloth that will provide for what i am needing? Could i do a layer of somethin thinner and then do a layer of dbm1708? how many layers of cloth should i do?

 

You can use biaxe (1708), it will work but it makes for a very expensive layup. You're right that with biaxe you'll use a lot of resin. Trust me, I know as I did my stringers that way. Search my posts for more on this.

PAR will certainly weigh in as to the weight of the cloth you might use.

Again, you can use biaxe but straight cloth is a better and less expensive alternative.

Ya your post is what made me want to change. I asked uscomposites and they said i can use a layer of somethin else but to put the dbm1708 down first and then do a layer of the regular 10 oz http://uscomposites.com/cloth.html I might go with this approach i have 30yd of dbm1708 comin and that should be enough for the first layer and then i can do the next layer in the 10oz.
