Spinnaker pole failures

    We've seen at least a couple of spinnaker pole failures during this America's Cup (Prada and NZ), what are the causes, the failure modes? Buckling or just tensile strenght?

    As I recall, it's usually due to a lateral impact on the spar, as in slamming it against the forestay.

    Otherwise, the only stress they ever see is compression along the length, and that they can handle.
